Good morning. Edition #234 of The Insight Labs Daily, Sunday, September 6. Five consumer-business reads, no drama.

1. SUGAR Cosmetics raises at an 80% valuation cut

On September 1, SUGAR Cosmetics’ board approved a Rs 144.5 crore round from A91 Partners, per filings reported on September 4. Post-money valuation: Rs 550 to 600 crore, against Rs 2,600 to 2,700 crore in November 2024 and a Rs 3,000 crore peak in 2022. Revenue fell 20% to Rs 404 crore in FY25 and the loss nearly doubled to Rs 135 crore, after 30 to 40% of its stores were shut for losing money. The third consumer down-round or shutdown this week: cheap 2021 capital is being repriced brand by brand. (Inc42)

2. Aditya Birla’s fourth consumer bet is wires

On September 3, the group launched Ultravolt under UltraTech Cement with Rs 1,800 crore behind it: 500-plus districts, 6,000 pin codes, 1 million km of capacity heading to 3.5 to 4 million, and a plan to reach 100,000 retailers through 5,000 existing UltraTech outlets. KEI fell 8% and Polycab over 5% on Friday. After Opus in paints, Pivot and Indriya, the pattern is set: enter a category with a few fat incumbents and borrow the group’s distribution. Paints showed the margin cost; Hindalco’s copper gives wires a cost edge paints never had. (Business Standard)

3. Sugar up 19%, palm oil up 21%: FMCG cost relief fades

Equirus Securities’ September 1 update says the FMCG raw-material picture has rotated rather than eased. Crude-linked inputs fell 10% in the quarter, but sugar is up 19% on the year and 20% in one quarter, palm oil up 21%, menthol up 33%. Biscuits, confectionery and soft drinks take the sugar hit; soaps and snacks the palm oil. Equirus stays long on all 13 names it covers, Britannia at Rs 6,477 and Marico at Rs 954, preferring cereal-heavy portfolios. Which company passes cost on and which eats margin is the second-quarter story. (Business Today)

4. WhatsApp now pays your electricity bill

On September 4, WhatsApp launched bill payments in India: 22,722 billers across 30 categories on Bharat Connect, paid by UPI or card, rolling out to all users over the coming weeks. The gap is large: in July WhatsApp Pay processed 16.78 crore UPI transactions worth Rs 12,957 crore, eighth among UPI apps. Bills are the most habitual payment a household makes, and this is the CRED playbook under new WhatsApp head Kunal Shah. Watch the September NPCI table for movement out of eighth place. (Inc42)

5. Ola Electric opens its first dealer stores

On September 4, Ola Electric announced dealer-run stores live in seven states, one month after opening its network to partners and five years after launching on a company-owned-only model. Target: 500-plus dealerships in two quarters, with owned stores becoming experience centres and the S1Z at Rs 79,999 as the hook. August EV registrations fell 10% and Ola lost two-wheeler share, which explains the reversal. Dealers bring rent, working capital and service that Ola’s cash-burning balance sheet no longer wants to fund. Diwali is the first real test. (Business Standard, PTI)

Also inside: Flipkart Minutes at 1,000 dark stores with 1,000 more coming by mid-2027 (UBS), Maruti’s entry-level sales doubling, and KRAFTON’s extra $250 million for India.
