Six stories from the last 72 hours, and one question running through most of them: what a low price is actually buying.
1. Tata prices a sedan below every rival
Tata launched the Aeris on Saturday at an introductory Rs 5.29 lakh, retiring the Tigor for private buyers. That price sits Rs 1.01 lakh under the Maruti Dzire and Rs 71,000 under the Hyundai Aura, with CNG variants opening at Rs 6.29 lakh. The compact sedan segment still moves 3.4 to 3.5 lakh units a year, up from 2.7 lakh five years ago, so it lost share rather than volume. August made the case for starting over: Dzire 18,418 units, Tigor 862. Tata is testing whether the SUV shift was ever about taste or only about price. (Autocar Professional)
2. Ather’s cheapest scooter is its best margin
Ather’s chief business officer said on Friday that the Rs 99,999 Konarc earns better margins than the Rizta priced above it. The saving is engineered rather than discounted: the new EL platform swaps aluminium for a tubular steel chassis, replaces the two-stage belt drive with a gearbox, and folds the charger and motor controller into a single unit. Five variants are planned, four of them near Rizta pricing. If it holds through a full quarter of deliveries, it resets what the segment’s entry price is allowed to cost to build, and exposes every rival that reached Rs 1 lakh by cutting into gross margin instead. 3. Third Wave Coffee’s 250th cafe, and 70 more coming
Third Wave Coffee opened its 250th cafe in Hazratganj, Lucknow on Friday, ten years in, and set a target of about 320 cafes by FY27. That is roughly 70 net new stores in a single financial year, after twelve months of entering Agra, Kolkata, Visakhapatnam and Jalandhar, with Ludhiana, Manipal, Kochi and Amritsar next. The cities matter more than the count. A tier-two high street runs on all-day footfall and a different ticket size, and at this pace the binding constraint stops being capital and becomes trained baristas. (Indian Retailer)
4. A silver chain opens one store and plans 150
Anera Silver opened its first store in HSR Layout, Bengaluru on Saturday, with six more due within eight weeks and a stated plan of 100 to 150 stores in five years at roughly 2,500 sq ft each. The first-year revenue goal is Rs 25 crore. Its founder spent two decades in jewellery retail, much of it associated with Kushals. Silver is the one precious-metal category where the organised share is still small enough to take, but silver’s ticket value is a fraction of gold’s, so the same rent and staff have to be recovered across far more transactions. 5. Flipkart adds 900 delivery hubs for one season
Flipkart is creating more than 2.5 lakh seasonal roles for the festive season, about 1.4 lakh of them in last-mile delivery, alongside more than 900 new delivery hubs weighted to tier-two and tier-three towns and shared with Flipkart Minutes. Roughly 75,000 of the hires are entering logistics work for the first time. Amazon India is adding over 1.6 lakh seasonal workers and Meesho expects more than 10 lakh. The hiring is temporary and the hubs are not, which makes this a quick-commerce build-out wearing a festive label. (Free Press Journal)
