Five numbers from India’s consumer economy worth two minutes of your morning.
1. A $3.4 billion startup sold for $206 million
upGrad completed its acquisition of Unacademy on September 1 at just over $206 million, about 6 per cent of the $3.44 billion peak Unacademy touched in 2021. The deal is a 100 per cent share swap, so SoftBank, General Atlantic and the rest receive upGrad stock, not cash. Unacademy was not distressed: around Rs 900 crore in the bank, Rs 400 crore in revenue, most units near profit. This is the first large, clean print of what Indian edtech is actually worth after the boom. (TechCrunch, Business Standard)
2. Carmakers shipped their biggest August ever
Dispatches to dealers hit a record for the month at roughly 4.5 lakh passenger vehicles, close to 40 per cent above last August. Tata Motors grew fastest at 67,753 units, up 56 per cent, widening its lead over Mahindra, which moved 1,07,648 vehicles overall. Hyundai posted its best August on record. The caveat: these are wholesales against a weak base, and the channel is being filled ahead of a 9 to 11 per cent festive forecast. If retail lags, December becomes a discount month. (Autocar India, Free Press Journal)
3. UPI crossed 24.5 billion monthly transactions
NPCI’s August data showed 24.51 billion UPI transactions worth Rs 29.82 lakh crore, both records. Volume rose 22 per cent over last year while value rose 20 per cent, and the daily average reached 791 million. Volume outrunning value means the average ticket keeps shrinking: UPI’s growth now comes from the tea stall and the vegetable cart, cash’s last territory. The catch is that none of this volume earns a fee, and free gets more expensive every month. (NPCI, Business Standard)
4. Factories grew at their slowest pace in five years
The HSBC India Manufacturing PMI fell to 52.8 in August from 53.5, the weakest expansion in five years and the third straight decline. New orders grew at their slowest in five years, and manufacturers cut jobs for the first time in more than two years. Set that against record car dispatches and record UPI on the same day: the consumer-facing economy is stocking a big quarter while factory-gate demand softens. If the job cuts repeat in September, this becomes a capacity story, not a sentiment story. (Reuters, Business Standard)
5. Two insurance sellers merged into a Rs 6,600 crore machine
InsuranceDekho and RenewBuy announced their merger on September 1, creating a distribution platform with a premium book above Rs 6,600 crore and more than 6 lakh agent partners reaching nearly every pin code in India. The combined business runs under the InsuranceDekho brand and plans to file IPO papers by the end of September, targeting Rs 2,500 to 3,000 crore at a valuation near Rs 9,500 crore. Insurance in India is sold, not bought, and the agent network is the moat. (Business Standard, ANI)
